Wildlife came to visit … and they came to eat!
There I was, minding my own business, sitting at my computer, in my computer/office room at home, working away at whatever it was I was working away at … some email nonsense, or this blog (very important), or whatever. My desk is situated right next to my window. I sit sideways to the window. If I turn my head 90 degrees to the right, then the view out my window is of trees and shrubs and a bit of green lawn. A neighboring home can be seen through the trees, but no home is very close to me here where I now live. It’s very pretty.
So there I was, minding my own business when, out of the corner of my eye, something caught my attention … just a slight movement. So I turned my head to look … whoa! Wildlife! 🙂
Truth be told, I had seen deer walking through this community of homes where I now live, but not this close to my home! (that’s the edge of my window, there on the left side of the photo above)
I jumped up and got my camera, always close at hand.
And then looked fully out the window …
The momma (above) was looking back at me. Mommas know everything, don’t they?
If you click on and enlarge the photo above, you’ll see a young red-ish deer over Momma’s shoulder, walking away from her. You can see that other deer’s head in the photo below.
After Mom looked at me, I guess she decided I was ok. She reached above her and nibbled for quite a while on the leaves above.
Usually there are five deer hanging out together here in this community. So far, I had spotted only four in the several minutes that I’d been watching them. So I left my computer/office room and walked through my home inside, looking out the other windows of my home, hoping to find the fifth deer.
Ah ha! Here it is … right outside my living room window!
She/he was nuzzling my “Burning Bush” or Euonymus Alata if you prefer the botanical name. I thought it was pretty cute since it’s not every day that someone gets their Euonymus Alata nuzzled.
The young deer was intent on checking out those leaves and finding which ones might be the best ones to nibble on. She found some tasty ones.
I didn’t think she could see me through the window, given the reflection on the glass, but evidently she could … and did. At one point, she looked up, directly at me, startled!
I snapped the photo above and then held perfectly still. It took several seconds … but eventually she gave in and went back to sampling the new leaves on that Burning Bush. Those sweet new green leaves were just too delicious.
I watched her for a bit. One side of my Burning Bush is now practically denuded, but it’s all for a good cause. I’m glad she enjoyed the snack.
I walked back to my computer/office room in order to upload the photos from my camera to my computer. Outside my window there remainded one lone little youngster, nibbling away at whatever was of interest.
After a few minutes, she/he gave me a swish of the tail and trotted off in search of Mom, who wasn’t very far away … this particular Mom is never very far away from these youngsters.
And that’s my wildlife story for today. These deer are so accustomed to being around humans that I suppose they aren’t really “wildlife”, but they are wild. There’s a strict rule in this community that we do not feed the deer. They forage on the plants that are here … plants that have been here for probably thousands of years, when the deer’s ancestors were here. That’s pretty cool.
Come back any time Mom! I’ll be sitting at my computer, looking out my window. 🙂
Very nice! What a beautiful environment to be in (as I sit here in 104F) watching the occasional lizard).
Holy smokes, 104 degrees F! Do the lizards even ever move? Sometimes I get tired of the rain here, but lately it has been sunny and lovely, with a high temp of maybe 72F. Thanks Anne. 🙂
How wonderful to have them that close , Surely you have named them . That is one beautiful flower in the first photo .
Oh, no I have not named them! I have been derelict in my duties. Next time they come by I’ll ask the Momma what their names are. 🙂 Thanks Vernon, I will report back.
That beautiful flower is indeed beautiful isn’t it? It’s my favorite color of Rhododendron … a gorgeous light lavendar outside with a delicate pink inside. Couldn’t have picked anything better to already be planted right outside my window.
What a great surprise. And what a great area to live in, it’s really pretty!
This area sure is a great place to live in Nebraska. And now, of course, I am continually glancing out my window in hopes of seeing the deer again. Come on Momma, get back here! 🙂
That Rhododendron is exquisite. The location of the burning bush and the camellia are interesting. It appears someone has drastically pruned the burning bush and I think that’s a good thing, ordinarily they are allowed to grow too tall. It seems that young deer thinks the burning bush needs even more pruning! haha!
Hi Ruby. I don’t especially like where those two bushes are either. The burning bush is not at all attractive during the winter, so should not be my front-and-center view out my living room window. I am the one who hacked it back (it was about seven feet tall and completely blocked the window) and I’ll see what happens with it this next year. I also pruned the camellia by about 1/3 of its height and it now looks so much better in the photo here (it too was monstrously tall before this blog photo). Yes, that young deer seemed to agree with me about pruning the burning bush, although the burning bush is truly very lop-sided now … ha! We shall see.
I like the photo of momma deer reaching up to eat those leaves. That is a sweet photo.
I love that one too. 🙂
Got a chuckle from that last photo, the one with the swish of his tail. Pretty cute.
I chuckle at that one too. So sweet and sassy. 🙂
