American School – Philippine Islands

Just one photo and a few words in this post.  I grew up in the Philippines, as some of you may have read on the “All About Ann” page.  I was messing around on the internet here at home the other day and found the photo above.  It’s the American School in the Philippines where the children of diplomats and other foreign government officials from the USA and all manner of other countries (including a few Filipino kids) went to grade school and high school in Manila.  The building in the photo above is the very building I went to school in for 5 years, from 1st grade through 5th grade.  The photo above was taken in the mid 1950s which is when I was there.  The boys in the photo are older than I was or my brother was, so we wouldn’t have known them, but those boys had to have been there the very same years that I was there.  Don’t you love the greasy hair-dos and the rolled up jeans?  And the cars are pretty cool too. 🙂

Pretty cool. The boy on the right, in front of the sign, looks like he is imitating Elvis.

Or, good golly Miss Molly (er, I mean Ginger), maybe Elvis was imitating the kid in the photo. Or maybe they all looked alike back then. What fun. 🙂

What a happy accident to come across the photo – is the building long gone?
Photography is an amazing way to document things. I wonder who snapped the pic?

I was sad to learn that the building is long gone. My dentist’s “assistant” here at home is a woman who is/was a dentist (with the appropriate college degrees and experience) in the Philippines but who cannot be a dentist in the USA unless she goes back to school here starting over completely. So she (the assistant) and I have been talking all about the Philippines and she is trying to talk me into going back. That’s why I got online and looked for photos … so, yes, the school is gone and the home we lived in (in Forbes Park) is gone too … as are the original buildings at Camp John Hay up near Baguio where we would vacation. … the three places I remember the most, and the most fondly, so I suspect I won’t go back. But I also suspect more research is needed. 🙂
